Brian Burr sued his former employer The Kazi Group Companies and related defendants after he was terminated as an officer and director. He brought claims for wrongful discharge in violation of public policy, failure to pay accrued sick pay and medical expenses, breach of contract and preliminary injunctive relief.

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Burr contended that defendants fired him after he spoke out about The Kazi Group's failure to pay excise taxes to the State of Hawaii.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied Burr's material allegations and asserted various affirmative defenses.
Result
The jury found for Burr on his breach of contract claim and cause of action for a debt owed and awarded him $5,900 in damages. It found for defendants and against Burr on the wrongful termination and failure to pay wages claims.
Other Information
According to plaintiff, the case was settled before the jury returned for a high/low amount depending on the outcome. The terms of the settlement are confidential. Kazi also brought a cross-complaint alleging that Burr owed the repayment of loans in an amount in excess of $190,000. The jury found in favor of Burr on this claim. FILING DATE: Jan. 22, 2013.
