Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired and other disability rights advocates filed a class action against Redbox Automated Retail LLC and Save Mart Supermarkets, in connection with Redbox kiosk access.
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs alleged that Redbox kiosks were not accessible to legally blind persons. As a result, many legally blind individuals were unable to access, or were deterred from attempting to access, the video and game rental services available at Redbox kiosks in California.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied all liability.
Result
The parties agreed to settle the dispute. As part of the settlement, Redbox agreed to modify its kiosks to allow access to legally blind customers. The modifications will include the addition of headphone jack, tactile keyboard, and text-to-speech output. The settlement also included a $1.2 million fund for eligible class members.
