SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO Before he became a lawyer, V. Raymond Swope worked for a farm machinery company in Des Moines, Iowa.
As the first black district sales manager Massey Ferguson ever had - less than 20 years after the Civil Rights Act - Swope had to charm some of the dealers and the farmers who were taken aback by his presence.
