SAN JOSE - Facing a roomful of gloomy defendants in a packed courtroom during an afternoon pretrial misdemeanor calendar, Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Edward Lee tries to lighten the mood and, perhaps, lower expectations.

"You're not first because I like you," he said of the first case on the calendar, which included 48 matters. "You're not last because I hate you."
