RIVERSIDE - Matthew C. Perantoni was single, 39 and a deputy public defender when Monique, an infant with dazzling blue-green eyes, came into his life. She was 8 months old and in need of a good home. Two years later, her baby sister, Andrea, joined them.

The siblings were preschoolers when Perantoni adopted them. The little girls changed his life.
